How to Get More Jobs From Texts: The Contractor's Playbook

Turn the texts you're already getting into booked jobs — a step-by-step system

You don't need more leads. You need to convert the leads you already have. Most contractors are sitting on a pile of text conversations that went quiet — and every one of them is a job that another contractor booked.

This is the playbook we've watched work across trades: four moves that turn texts into jobs.

Move 1: Answer in seconds, not evenings

The #1 factor in who wins a job is who replies first. When a homeowner texts three contractors:

A reply in under 5 minutes puts you in the conversation

A reply in an hour puts you in the maybe pile

A reply at 9 PM when you finally sit down puts you in the trash

The fix isn't willpower — it's a system. A dedicated business line with automatic text-back, or an AI that answers while you work, ensures no message waits longer than a few seconds.

Action: Never let an inbound text go more than 5 minutes unanswered during waking hours. Automate what you can't personally cover.

Move 2: Answer the price question head-on

"How much?" is the most common first text — and the most commonly fumbled. Vague answers ("it depends, need to see it") lose to specific ones.

The contractor who texts back "repairs start at $129 plus parts, flat-rate quotes are free, and I have tomorrow morning open" just booked the job — because they answered the real question (is this affordable?) and moved to the next step (booking).

You don't have to quote blind. Give a starting price, explain what changes it, and offer the site visit. Specificity wins.

Action: Write your 5 most common price answers down. Know what you'll say for each before the text arrives.

Move 3: Book in the thread

The moment a customer shows intent — "yes," "that works," "what time?" — stop explaining and start booking. The perfect response has two parts: a confirmation and a next step.

"Great — I have Thursday at 10 AM open. Want me to lock it in? I'll text a reminder the day before."

No links to a booking page. No "let me check my calendar and call you back." Book right there in the conversation, then confirm with day, date, time, and address.

Action: Treat every positive reply as a booking request. If you can't book instantly, you're losing the ones who won't wait.

Move 4: Follow up until they decide

Here's a number most contractors don't believe: most quoted jobs are lost to silence, not to competition. The customer didn't hire someone else — they just never decided, and nobody followed up.

A single warm check-in a few days after a quote recovers a surprising share of those:

"Hey — just checking in on the quote for the patio. Happy to adjust the scope or answer questions. No pressure either way!"

That's not spam. That's what a good office manager does, and it closes jobs.

Action: Follow up once, 2–4 days after every quote that goes quiet. Two touches max, then let it go.

The system that runs all four moves

Here's the thing about this playbook: moves 1–4 are simple, but running them consistently while you're on a job is impossible for a solo operator — which is exactly why the businesses that win are the ones that automate.

Prybar was built to run this playbook 24/7: instant text response (move 1), pricing answers from your real rates (move 2), booking in the thread with availability checks (move 3), and automatic follow-ups on quiet quotes (move 4) — with you in control of every conversation.

You can test it for free in 5 minutes. Send yourself a text like a customer would and watch it work.

Prybar helps trade businesses never miss a customer text again. Responds instantly, captures leads, books jobs — all while you work. Try it free.
